Gulf War Veterans Sue 33 Banks, 11 Chemical Companies
Jim Hightower's Weblog: "Corporations supported Sadam's Chemical Weapons program; Veterans and their Children Suffer
By THOMAS D. WILLIAMS, Courant Staff Writer
Sixteen veterans from the Persian Gulf War filed suit Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, N.Y., against 11 chemical companies and 33 banks from throughout the world that allegedly helped Iraq construct and support its extensive chemical warfare program.
The suit alleges that evidence shows the companies 'built Saddam Hussein's nerve gas and mustard gas factories, supplied him with chemical weapons production equipment, and sold him the bulk chemical precursors used to make his chemical weapons.' It asks to become a class action on behalf of all veterans of the 1991 gulf war who can prove they became sick from chemical weapons' fallout.
These companies and banks, the suit claims, are identified in the official written Iraqi disclosures given to the U.N. weapons inspectors after the war. They essentially expose Hussein's procurement network for building his large chemical weapons arsenal, the complaint alleges. The foreign companies and banks all do business in New York.
The banks named in the suit include Deutsche Bank AG of Germany, Lloyds Bank of the United Kingdom, Credit Lyonnais of France, State Bank of India, Banca Roma of Italy, National Bank of Pakistan, Arab Bank of Jordan, Bank of Tokyo and Kuwait Commercial bank. The companies that the suit claims have sold chemicals or materials to Iraq are headquartered in France, Switzerland, Germany, Great Britain and the United States - ABB Lummus Global Inc. in Delaware."

STOP MONSANTO SUIT AGAINST FAMILY FARMS IN MAINE PLEDGING NOT USE GROWTH HORMONES
ActForChange : Act Now
In a move of Goliath-attacking-David proportions, Monsanto, the multi-national agrichemical company, is suing a small, family-owned milk producer in Maine because they advertise that their farmers pledge not to use artificial growth hormones (also known as rBST) on the cows that produce their milk.
Oakhurst Dairy pays its suppliers a price premium not to use artificial growth hormones on their cows and they advertise this via a "Farmer's Pledge" emblem on their products. They do so in order to respond to consumer demand for dairy products produced by cows free of rBST. The dairy makes no health claim about the Farmer's Pledge, but Monsanto claims that even a factual assertion misleads consumers!

Sign the Petiton:
Dear Secretary Norton:
We demand that you fire Undersecretary J Steven Griles.
He is still receiving payments of $284,000 a year from his former lobbying firm while working for the government. He has violated his written promises to stop lobbying on their behalf.
No one in the government should be allowed to personally profit from the plunder of our public lands and the weakening of environmental health standards.FireGriles.com

FCNL has launched a public service radio campaign to increase voter registration. There are 30-second and 15-second announcements which are easily downloaded via the internet at www.FCNL.org. WAR IS NOT AN ANSWER, BUT VOTING IS!
Less than 25% of the eligible voters in the United States actually voted for the winner in the last presidential election. Clearly, people who vote can have a big impact. It's one peace demonstration that politicians can't ignore.
Radio stations are not required to play public service announcements. They have to be encouraged. Here are five good reasons you can give your favorite station to play our FCNL announcements:
--Voter participation in crucial to our democracy.
--FCNL announcements are non-partisan.
--FCNL announcements direct listeners to our web site, FCNL.org, where they can find questions to ask the candidates, and find help registering to vote in their state.
--It's easy. All the station has to do is go to the home page of our web site, FCNL.org, click on "Vote 2004" and then "Public Service Radio Announcements" (You can do this too!) The announcements are easily downloaded as digital files.
--FCNL Public Service Announcements can also be downloaded at the commercial web site:

Feminist Majority Foundation: " No Vote on Unborn Victims of Violence Act
7/28/2003 - Senators Mike DeWine (R-OH) and Bill Frist (R-TN) last Wednesday failed to gain Senate approval by unanimous consent for the Unborn Victims of Violence Act (S 1019), a bill which makes harming or killing a zygote, embryo or fetus while attacking a pregnant woman during the commission of a federal crime, a separate and punishable crime. The bill, which grants personhood and rights to a zygote, embryo or fetus at any stage of development, applies to over 60 federal crimes including interstate kidnapping and drug-related violence on federal property. Senate Minority Whip Harry Reid (D-NV) objected to the call for a vote, arguing that Senate Democrats were still drafting amendments to the measure, reported the Dayton Daily News.
Earlier this month, the House Judiciary Committee Constitution Subcommittee voted 6 to 3, approving HR 1997, the companion bill to the Unborn Victims of Violence Act.
The Feminist Majority joins other women’s organizations in opposing this bill – which is a thinly veiled attempt to undermine Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, by granting personhood to a zygote, embryo or fetus. Abortion rights advocates say the Motherhood Protection Act of 2003 (HR 2247), proposed by Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) is a more appropriate measure, because it proposes equally tough penalties for a person who harmed or killed a zygote, embryo or fetus while attacking a pregnant woman, but does not give the zygote, embryo or fetus personhood or rights."
