AREA: PEACE AND CONFLICT, CORPORATE ETHICS
ISSUE: WAR PROFITEERING
SPONSOR: COMMON CAUSE
ACTION: Open Letter to Halliburton CEO
Common Cause Action Center
"Open Letter To Halliburton CEO David Lesar
Is Halliburton Engaging in War Time Profiteering?

With each passing week, new scandals emerge involving Halliburton’s mismanagement and questionable corporate behavior. Over the past several months, Common Cause has monitored Halliburton’s no-bid contract for reconstruction in Iraq, documented kickbacks to Halliburton personnel, and witnessed overcharging for gas imported from Kuwait. Common Cause supporters have petitioned Congress to increase its oversight of the reconstruction of Iraq and specifically the role played by Halliburton.

We are now asking CEO David Lesar, to pledge to the American people that Halliburton will improve its stewardship of the $1.2 billion contract to rebuild Iraq. We are also asking that Halliburton close its offshore subsidiaries that allow it to skirt paying its fair share of taxes and to trade with nations under U.S. sanctions. "

AREA: ENVIRONMENT
ISSUE: DEFEAT PRO-POLLUTER ENERGY BILL
SPONSOR: NATIONAL RESOURCES DEFENSE COUNCIL
ACTION: DEFEAT BUSH-CHENEY ENERGY BILL
:
Robert Redford: "President Bush and his Senate allies have vowed to pass their pro-polluter energy bill into law over the next few weeks. If they succeed, this shameless package of corporate welfare will cost us $50 billion over the next decade and prolong our dangerous reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear power. That’s why it is so important for you to contact your own senators right away and tell them to block this attack on our pocketbooks, our environment, and our health."

AREA: HUMAN RIGHTS / CEDAW
ISSUE: "Unborn Victims of Violence Act" is back.
ACTION: CONTACT CONGRESS re S.1019/S. 146, H.R. 1997
SPONSOR: ACLU
ACLU: Oppose Attempts to Undermine Roe v. Wade
Anti-choice lawmakers are waging yet another battle over reproductive freedom with legislation that would create a new and separate offense to punish anyone who injures or causes the death of a fetus during the commission of certain federal crimes. Although proponents claim that this bill is intended merely to punish violent offenders, it is in reality a dangerous attempt to separate a woman from her fetus in the eyes of the law. Such separation is the first step toward eroding a woman's right to determine the fate of her own pregnancy and to direct the course of her own health care. It is no accident that anti-choice lawmakers have rejected alternative proposals that would appropriately punish violence against pregnant women without undermining reproductive freedom.

AREA: HUMAN RIGHTS, FAIR TRADE, SWEATSHOPS, CAFTA
ISSUE: BLANKET PROCUREMENT PERMISSION FOR STATE/CITY PURCHASES
SPONSOR: PUBLIC CITIZEN
ACTION: Contact State and Municipal Officials
Public Citizen | Global Trade Watch
[This is a complex issue, but very important. Please sread the info on the website. Essentially,
make sure state and local officials know that some ‘trade’ rules negotiated behind closed doors without their input much less their approval are about to permanently shut down their right and authority to halt off-shoring of state services, require living or prevailing wages in government contracts, or preferences for recycled paper, locally-grown food, locally-produced vehicles and more. ]

A leaked letter from the Bush Administration to state governors reveals a sneaky attempt now underway to get governors to ‘voluntarily’ commit their states to comply with draconian constraints on domestic procurement (purchasing) policy included in the recently completed CAFTA and proposed for FTAA. Unbelievably, the leaked documents show that the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office is seeking blanket permission from governors to sign states on to the procurement provisions of ALL trade agreements under negotiation – including the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), the South African Customs Union and a raft of bilateral deals with Australia, Morocco, Columbia, Thailand and more nations. -Read the leaked letter on the web site

AREA: PEACE AND CONFLICT, SMALL ARMS TRAFFICKING
ISSUE: INTERNATIONAL ARMS TRADE TREATY
ACTION: CONTACT SENATE
SPONSOR: FCNL Letter Writing Project for February, 2004
small arms, congress - FCNL: "The International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) launched an important campaign last fall, in an effort to ease the problems of armed violence around the globe. The staff at FCNL is asking you to focus your letter writing project on this campaign this month. "
[the sample letter is on the website, very easy to complete and mail]

AREA: SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC RIGHTS, DEMILITARIZATION
ISSUE: SHIFT FEDERAL BUDGET PRIORITIES TO HUMAN AND ENVIRONMENTAL NEEDS
SPONSOR: Friends Committe on National Legislation (FCNL)
ACTION: LETTERS TO CONGRESS
FCNL -- Action Alerts and Updates:
Please urge your representative to support shifting federal budget priorities away from military spending toward meeting human and environmental needs at home and abroad."

AREA: HUMAN RIGHTS, CEDAW
ISSUE: Shari'a Lawn in Iraq
ACTION: MESSAGE TO BUSH ADMINISTRATION
SPONSOR: FEMINIST MAJORITY FOUNDATION
Feminist Majority Foundation - Compose a Message: "Iraqi Womens Rights Are Being Stripped
Express your concern to the Bush Administration about these threats.

Send a message to the Bush Administration that the recent move to cancel current family laws and to place family law under the jurisdiction of Islamic (shari'a) law is unacceptable. The US-backed Iraqi Governing Council has outraged Iraqi women and womens rights activists by approving Resolution 137 that will undermine the right to equality and freedom for all of Iraqi women. "

AREA: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL WARMING
ISSUE: PETITION FOR S130, McCIAN LIEBERMAN CLIMATE STEWARDSHIP
SPONSOR: Environmental Defense Action Fund
ACTION: UNDOIT.org
The McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act (S. 139) is a bipartisan reaction to the dangers of global warming and the Bush administration's policy of indifference toward them. This petition urges U.S. political leaders to support the McCain-Lieberman bill and its creation of national caps on greenhouse gas emissions.

Last year, the Climate Stewardship Act failed to pass by a surprisingly close 43-to-55 vote . Hot on the heels of this near victory, the bill will be revisited this year, providing an opportunity to build from the recent momentum to press for real global warming solutions. Help us get one million signatures and demonstrate to Washington, the nation and the rest of the world that global warming is a critical issue that demands immediate and decisive action.
[Sign up a few friends, and you can get a really nifty free tshirt!]

AREA: HUMAN RIGHTS, JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS
ISSUE: BUSH APPOINTS ANTI-HUMAN RIGHTS JUDGE
SPONSOR: NARAL
ACTION: CONTACT YOUR SENATORS
Take Action: Bush Appoints Anti-Choice Crusader to Federal Court:
"Bush Bypasses Senate, Appoints Anti-Choice Crusader to Federal Court
Thumbing his nose at the Senate for the second time in recent weeks, President Bush today appointed one of the most virulently anti-choice and anti-privacy judicial activists, Bill Pryor, to the Eleventh Circuit federal bench. Just a month after his surprise appointment of anti-choice Charles Pickering to the Fifth Circuit bench, Bush proved today that he’ll go to any length, violate any rule, and upset any precedent to pack the courts with anti-choice extremists.
Send a message to the Senate expressing your outrage over Bush’s unprecedented, arrogant, and divisive attack on our nation’s courts."

AREA: SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES, ENVIRONMENT
ISSUE: DEMAND US ADOPT STRINGENT MAD COW TESTING METHODS
SPONSOR: ORGANIC CONSUMERS.ORG
ACTION: PETITION
MadCow.com:
"Join tens of thousands of citizens and sign the Mad Cow USA -Stop the Madness petition, demanding that the US Government adopt and enforce the same strict standards required by the European Union and Japan:
* Mandatory testing for all cattle brought to slaughter, before they enter the food chain.
* Ban the feeding of blood, manure, and slaughterhouse waste to animals."

AREA: ENVIRONMENT, WILDLIFE
ISSUE: STOP AERIAL SHOOTING OF ALASKAN WOLVES
ACTION/SPONSOR: Help Save Alaskas Wolves
[The focus of the action is to restore natural ecological balance between caribou and wolf populations, not just object to the hunting method.]
Alaska is home to the largest remaining population of gray wolves in the United States. Some 7,000 to 9,000 wolves roam the state. But unlike wolves in the lower 48 states, wolves in Alaska are not afforded protection under the Endangered Species Act, and wolf hunting is allowed in most parts of the state. In the past five years, nearly 7,500 wolves were killed through hunting and trapping.
But the greatest threat to Alaska's wolves is due to the overturning of a ban on aerial or same-day land and shoot wolf hunting. Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski signed a bill this summer that re-instates public "land and shoot" and airborne wolf shooting Hunters in planes will search for wolves, "buzz" the pack, and chase them until the wolves are exhausted. Then a person shoots from the air or lands and shoots the wolves as they flounder in the snow. It's an inhumane practice. The people of Alaska have TWICE voted to revoke land-and-shoot in the last seven years. But certain state officials want wolves killed to boost moose and caribou herds for hunters. Numerous scientific studies show that wolves are beneficial to the overall health of natural ecosystems, and keep Alaska’s moose and caribou populations healthy and strong.

AREA: HUMAN RIGHTS, PRIVACY
ISSUE: PRIVACY OF MEDICAL RECORDS
SPONSOR WORKING ASSETS / WORKING FOR CHANGE
ACTION: TELL ASHCROFT TO CEASE ISSUING SUPOENAS OF MEDICAL RECORDS:
ActForChange : Act Now
In an unprecedented move to intimidate doctors, hospitals and women who have had abortions, the Department of Justice has subpoenaed the abortion medical records of hundreds of patients around the country. Among the doctors whose records have been subpoenaed are those who filed suit to challenge the recently signed late term abortion ban as unconstitutional. These subpoenas are an appalling attempt to violate doctor-patient privacy and should be withdrawn immediately. "

AREA: CIVIL RIGHTS
UPDATE: NYC City Council Passes Bill of Rights Resolution !
New York City Bill of Rights Defense Campaign

New York City Becomes the Largest City in the U.S. to Oppose the Infringement of Civil Liberties in the Name of National Security"
On Wednesday, February 4, New Yorkers made history!

Heeding our sustained grassroots outcry, an overwhelming majority of NYC Council Members voted today in favor of Resolution 60, which calls upon government officials to uphold civil rights and civil liberties when prosecuting the war on terrorism. And thus, NYC became the 250th legislative body in the country to pass a Bill of Rights resolution. More than 43 million people are now represented by these "civil liberties safe zones."
